چکیده
Parity nonconservation ~PNC! in atoms, described in the standard model of the electroweak interaction by exchange of Z bosons between bound electrons and nuclear quarks, leads to nonvanishing electric-dipole matrix elements between atomic states with the same parity. The dominant part of PNC matrix elements ~arising from the vector nucleon current! is proportional to a conserved weak charge QW , which is sensitive to physics beyond the standard model such as the existence of additional neutral Z8 bosons. Measurements of the 6s-7s PNC amplitude in Cs, following the procedure described by Bouchiat and Bouchiat @1#, were carried out at the 2% level of accuracy by Gilbert and Wieman @2#. When combined with calculations of the PNC amplitudes, which were estimated to be accurate to 1% @3–5#, the measurements led to an experimental value for the weak charge,

Correlated many-body treatment of the Breit interaction with application to cesium atomic properties and parity violation
Corrections from the Breit interaction to basic properties of atomic Cs are determined in the framework of third-order relativistic many-body perturbation theory. The corrections to energies, hyperfine-structure constants, off-diagonal hyperfine 6S-7S amplitude, and electric-dipole matrix elements are tabulated. It is demonstrated that the Breit corrections to correlations are comparable to the...
متن کاملPrecise calculation of parity nonconservation in cesium and test of the standard model
We have calculated the 6s − 7s parity nonconserving (PNC) E1 transition amplitude, E P N C , in cesium. We have used an improved all-order technique in the calculation of the correlations and have included all significant contributions to E P N C. Our final value E P N C = 0.904 1 ± 0.5% × 10 −11 iea B (−Q W /N) has half the uncertainty claimed in old calculations used for the interpretation of...

We present accurate ab initio non-perturbative calculations of the Breit correction to the parity non-conserving (PNC) amplitudes of the 6s−7s and 6s−5d3/2 transitions in Cs, 7s−8s and 7s−6d3/2 transitions in Fr, 6s − 5d3/2 transition in Ba , 7s − 6d3/2 transition in Ra , and 6p1/2 − 6p3/2 transition in Tl. The results for the 6s− 7s transition in Cs and 7s− 8s transition in Fr are in good agre...
متن کاملPrecision measurement of parity nonconservation in cesium
The measurement of parity nonconservation (PNC) in atomic cesium is discussed in detail. With a spin-polarized atomic beam, this experiment achieves a fractional uncertainty of 0.35% in the measurement of the PNC amplitude for the transition between the 6S and 7S states of cesium, the lowest uncertainty of atomic PNC to date. By comparing the PNC amplitude on two hyperfine transitions, we measu...
متن کاملMeasurement of Parity Nonconservation and an Anapole Moment in Cesium
The amplitude of the parity-nonconserving transition between the 6S and 7S states of cesium was precisely measured with the use of a spin-polarized atomic beam. This measurement gives Im(E1pnc)/beta = -1.5935(56) millivolts per centimeter and provides an improved test of the standard model at low energy, including a value for the S parameter of -1.3(3)exp (11)theory. The nuclear spin-dependent ...
